With the ability to withstand up to 50,000 insertion and removal cycles, along with resistance to chemicals and electrostatic discharge (ESD), Datakey devices provide unmatched reliability while being easy to sterilise for safe use in sterile environments.

Medical and Healthcare Applications: Disposable Medical Products, Blood Testing, Ultrasound Monitors, X-ray Imaging.

Medical Case Studies

Challenge: Usage Tracking

Solution: Datakey memory devices can be tethered to disposable medical products that have a finite lifespan. Unlike bar codes and most RFID tags, Datakey products use re-writable memory, so usage data can be written back to the device over time, ensuring the disposable is not used more than the specified amount. Specialised Serial Memory tokens withstand all major sterilisation methods.

Challenge: Integration of multiple attachments

Solution: Medical devices often have host controller units that support multiple attachments. Each attachment may have unique operational characteristics, calibration parameters or required device settings.

Tethered Serial Memory tokens automatically identify the model and type of attachment. It can then relay the proper information about the attachment to the host. A reliable solution, connecting multiple devices, where this importance of timing information is paramount.

Challenge: Transportable Ventilator and/or Defibrillator

Solution: The MEDUMAT/MEDUVENT ventilator includes ODU SPRINGTAC® contacts in the docking station with charging interface (Life Base) and ODU MEDI‐SNAP® as an interface between the various SPO2 and ECG devices and the power supply.
The ODU receptacles that are used achieve 2 MOOP & 2MOPP (Means of Operator Protection & Patient Protection) and are thus compliant with IEC 60601-1. Thanks to their interface function, they can also withstand a high number of mating cycles.

Challenge: Improvement of Mobile X-ray machines

Solution: The ODU‐MAC® Modular Connector serves as the interface between a mobile X‐ray machine and a monitor cart. It transmits high current, data, and signals.

The mobile X‐ray unit provides precise 3D images for intraoperative quality assurance and offers individual images and various perspectives during surgical procedures.

Challenge: Docking connector for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Solution: The docking connectors provide contacting for the patient couch in the magnetic resonance imaging unit. In this case, a solution based on a customized docking frame is used. The modular principle allows transmission of coax, signals, and fiber optics, among others. As soon as the patient couch is inserted, it automatically connects to the MRI unit via the connector. The complete system solution is non-magnetic.

Challenge: Miniaturisation of Connectors for the New High Speed Digital Electronics

Solution: New manufacturing technology, such as design software and computerised numerical control equipment, is making it possible to design and manufacture smaller connectors faster and more cost-effectively.

Miniature connectors must still preserve signal integrity. Connectors must offer a low enough resistance interface to meet the electrical current load for the circuit.

Miniature and ultra-miniature connectors are creating new possibilities for what electronics can do. Omnetics’ polarised nano connectors (PZNs) are ultra-miniature connectors specifically designed to offer constant signal integrity processing in high shock and vibration applications. They are designed with spring pins and up to 30-gauge Teflon insulated wiring, with pins and sockets plated in nickel and gold to ensure constant contact. Their current applications include monitoring biomedical data. They are often used for robotic prosthetics, where miniature signals are continuously running back and forth.

Challenge: Micro Circular Connectors

Solution: The use of micro circular connectors to enable quick change probes and sensors in the medical diagnostics world. The insert portion of a miniature circular connector is over-molded to a design that serves as a connector and handle for a small electronic probe. In this case, the end of the probe contains a thermistor that changes electrically with temperature. A surgeon can insert the probe into the body and monitor the temperature of the patient’s blood and tissue. This instrument, called a Bowman Perfusion Monitor, is used to continuously measure the absolute tissue perfusion and temperature simultaneously. The data is captured and printed in real time onto a paper strip- chart. This gives the physician early information to help with intervention and avoid risk of potential reactions during the procedure. The connector inserts can be pre-wired with varying numbers of contacts @ 25 or 50 mil. pitch and are molded to various materials, as specified by the application. Most applications also require the connector assembly to be sterilised prior to use.
